Impressed By The Junior NAA

To the Editor:

Recently, my husband and I  travelled to Washington, DC with the Newtown Action Alliance, accompanied by a sizable group of high school students associated with the Junior NAA. These students, many of whom are AP students, gave up two days out of their busy fall schedules to meet with members of Congress and advocate for background checks to help reduce gun violence in our country.

As a long time Newtown resident, teacher, and member of many local organizations, I have seen Newtown youth at it’s best but I can sincerely say that these students impressed me beyond any others. Those who joined us in Congressional meetings were educated, informed and informative, well-prepared for comments and questions directed to them, respectful and polite and presented their points of view with evidence to back it up.

If this is the future of America, I have great hopes that we can once again experience the level of dignity and respect that we enjoyed in the world before our generation set such a poor example. To the parents of these youth, you should be extremely proud.  To the educators and role models who have helped to shape them, it is a job well done.

Respectfully,
Donna Miklaszewski
